? Chairman's Welcome

Verwood University of the Third Age

Chairman’s Welcome 2018 – 2019

Welcome to Verwood U3A. If you are looking for an active retirement, you have come to the right place. All the research into our health and well-being stresses how important it is to remain active, mentally, physically and socially. U3A offers all three! Our name says we are a “university”, but we’re one with a difference – no exams, no tests, no qualifications, and everyone welcome to join regardless of background, experience or education. “Third Age” means everybody no longer of working age. We love to learn, but the way we do it ensures we have fun at the same time. We value the social and the learning benefits equally.
Please explore this website where you will find details of what we have to offer. At its heart are the 26 or so Group Activities held in various local venues, weekly fortnightly or monthly. In addition we periodically hold social meetings in the United Reformed Church with speakers on a wide range of topics, drawn from our membership, also regular quizzes and a monthly pub lunch. Our very active Travel Group organise a whole series of excellent coach trips. Look at the Travel section to see reviews, photos and details of what’s coming up. All the latest news is posted on the Home Page where you will also find a “Your Say” section to read other members comments and to post your own. There is also a Calendar of forthcoming events.
Our year runs from September to June, but you can join at any time. We hold an “Open Day” at the Memorial Hall each year during the summer break, and you can find details nearer the time on our website. Take a look at the “Activities” page and see if there is anything there that interests you, then go to “Application” and print the application form (alternatively you can call in to the Verwood Library and pick up a form). Then having completed the form go through the check list under “How to Join” and send your form to our Membership Secretary. Don’t forget to check availability with the activity group leader, and remember to enclose a stamped addressed envelope with your form and membership fee. Incidentally due to strong membership growth we have been able to considerably reduce this fee over the last two years. That’s all there is to it before enjoying your chosen activity(s), there is no limit to the number except the availability of places. We always like to hear from you regarding your U3A experience, so if you have any concerns or suggestions etc. just email me using the link below.
I joined the Verwood U3A when I moved to Verwood in 2012, and feel things my Wife and I did. We were made very welcome, meeting a lot of very nice people and striking up several good friendships, and I am sure you will have the same experience. We are all volunteers and we rely on members volunteering their help. If you have a skill, interest or enthusiasm you think you might possibly be able to share, we’d love to hear from you. All of our group activities have started this way, and the committee are here to assist new start-ups by arranging venues etc. If you’d like to help us on the committee side we’d also welcome your contribution.
Verwood is a vibrant and incredibly friendly U3A. I am confident that 2018-19 will be our biggest and beat year yet. I really hope that you will join us and become part of it.

David Allen
