Verwood U3A is the local branch of the national U3A (“University of the Third Age”) (www.u3a.org.uk), part of a global voluntary organization which exists to promote learning and other activities for retired and semi-retired people of all backgrounds. There are no tests or exams it is purely for enjoyment.
Verwood U3A, like other local U3A’s all over the country, is run entirely by local volunteers. A committee is elected with an annual AGM in the autumn. A programme of weekly, fortnightly or monthly Group Activities is organised, each led by a Group Leader and held at local venues or in members’ homes. Monthly meetings, pub lunches and other social events and low cost coach trips are also organised for all members.
We also hold Open Days to recruit new members and run a stall at the annual Verwood Rustic Fayre and other local events. We always need and welcome new volunteers both on the committee and as Group Leaders. Members are strongly encouraged to contact any member of the committee if you would like to discuss volunteering on the committee or in some other way or have ideas or requests for new Groups.
We publicise our activities via the website, local “freesheets” and posters. However our existing members are our best recruiters, using word-of-mouth in the local community.
Members are kept informed throughout the year via the website and emails and we also have a small section in Verwood Library where the latest leaflets are always available.
