A great change of venue for our latest outing. We drove to Poole harbour and boarded a pleasure cruiser for a sea trip to Wareham. Most of the group sat on the upper deck and viewed the coast from a different perspective as we crossed Poole bay. We turned into a river complex where the river was tidal and navigation looked to be difficult with tall reed beds on both sides. One of the rivers flowing into Poole bay was the river Piddle and we learned that this was the location for the film "African Queen" with Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, and thinking back to the film one could remember how the "African Queen" hid amongst the reed beds. We arrived at Wareham, tied up at a dock and went ashore to have lunch. Up to this time, the day had been sunny and warm but the return sea journey was cooler with a stiff breeze blowing. The upper deck emptied as passengers went below but a few brave souls stayed aloft and endured the breeze. The coach was waiting for us as we docked at Poole harbour and we drove back to Verwood having had an excellent day out.
