How can we summarise the place of Octavius/Augustus in European history?
1. Augustus transformed himself and Rome. Rome became an empire and he
became its first emperor and the “template” for all the following Roman
emperors (85 in total).
2. The Roman empire gave European history its first 500 years.
3. The power and cohesion of the Roman empire created an afterglow that
shaped European history for centuries afterwards.
4. The uncertainties in Augustus’ legacy would also shape European history in
unexpected ways, as we will see in our next person, another Roman: Saint
Augustine of Hippo.
